 Chris Rushton


Chris Rushton is a high level media professional, academic and manager with substantial boardroom experience. In addition to working as an award-winning newspaper editor, PR managing director and head of a large university department, he has also developed a career within the criminal justice system. 

He can advise on all aspects of communication strategy and editorial policy. Chris is currently chair of the Society of Editors’ Northern Region and was a member of the society’s national training committee, 2002-2014.

 Chris is now Visiting Professor of Journalism at the University of Sunderland, one of the largest journalism educators in the UK. He built the department from scratch and established nine undergraduate and four postgraduate degree programmes while Head of Journalism & PR (2000-2014). 

In addition to his media work, Chris has considerable boardroom experience. This includes serving as a Home Office appointee to Northumbria Probation Board (2001-2007) and as a Ministry of Justice appointee to the Strategic Management Board of MAPPA for Northumbria. This is the joint police/probation/prisons body that manages the risk posed by the most serious sexual and violent offenders. As well as sitting on the main board, he is a member of the Serious Case Review Panel.

 Chris has also been chair of Northumberland Thoroughbreds Ltd (a farmers’ co-operative; 2000-2005), non-exec director, New Prospects Ltd, North Tyneside (a not-for-profit association assisting the learning disabled; 2000-2003) and chair of a pre-school. He has also been an external examiner at the universities of Gloucestershire (2005-2009), Cumbria (2009-13) and Brunel (2011-15), as well as serving as an external validation panel member at the universities of Cumbria, Birmingham City, Leeds Trinity, Northampton and De Montfort.
