Neil Fowler is an Associate Member of Nuffield College, Oxford, where he is undertaking a two-year research plan investigating the reasons behind the decline of the UK regional newspaper industry and searching for any possible solutions. In October 2010 he will take up the prestigious Guardian Research Fellowship at the college to conclude his work.
 
As well as his research, Neil is running his own media consultancy, offering media advice and strategy across the board.
 
Prior to Oxford, Neil had a wide-ranging international career across British and Canadian regional newspapers, national magazines as well as running his own business.
 
He was editor of the Lincolnshire Echo at the age of 29, and then went on to edit the Derby Evening Telegraph, The Journal in Newcastle upon Tyne and The Western Mail, the national newspaper of Wales. He was also publisher and CEO of the Toronto Sun in Canada and was editor of Which? magazine, the UK’s largest-selling consumer magazine. He was also director of his own Cardiff-based business, Neil Fowler Communications.
 
He is a trustee of the Royal & Derngate Theatres in Northampton, where he lives, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
